Food Budget

In summer 2023, I spent a whole month volunteering in a hostel in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. I’ll go as far as to say that month is one of the highlights of my life.

So here’s a full day of eating in Las Palmas (breakfast, lunch, apéro, dinner) for around €30 total. Four spots I went back to over and over.

Breakfast at OAKBERRY Açaí

📍 Av. José Mesa y López 41 💰 From €7

After an early weekend surf session, this was the spot to put back every calorie I’d just burned and get the day going.

If you’re not familiar with açaí, it’s a Brazilian bowl made from frozen, mashed açaí berries, somewhere between a sorbet and a smoothie, topped with fruit and granola. The smallest bowl is €7, which sounds like a lot for breakfast until you try to finish it.

100% recommend.

Lunch at TKO Tacos

📍C. Sagasta 76, along Las Canteras beach 💰 €1 per taco

Have you ever had a €1 taco? Before this place, me neither.

It sits right on the Las Canteras seafront, which makes it the perfect stop after a morning on the sand, sunbathing, football, volleyball, whatever the hostel crowd had organised that day. You walk off the beach, order four or five tacos, and you’ve spent less than a coffee costs back in France.

Order more than you think you need. They’re small, and you’ll regret being modest.

Apero at 100 Montaditos

📍 P.º las Canteras 5 💰 €1–2 per montadito, €2 for a 40cl beer

Just a few minutes from the last spot, this is a franchise I’ve since stumbled upon in a few European cities.

The concept is a menu of 100 sandwich and snack options from €1–2. And of course, a 40 cl beer for €2. What more do you need for the rest of the evening before heading back to your hostel for a shower?

Dinner at Restaurante Sakura Hanami

📍 C. Pilarillo Seco 5 💰 €17 all-you-can-eat

After saving up on the other meals, we’ll enjoy the end of the night with an all-you-can-eat Asian buffet for €17.

You better bring some friends to keep the competition going!

Frequently asked questions

Where can you eat cheap in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria? +

A full day on a budget looks like an açaí bowl at OAKBERRY from €7 for breakfast, €1 tacos at TKO Tacos Sagunto by Las Canteras beach for lunch, €1–2 montaditos and a €2 beer at 100 Montaditos in the afternoon, and an all-you-can-eat Asian buffet at Sakura Hanami for €17 at night.

Is Las Palmas good for budget travelers? +

Very. Between the free city beach at Las Canteras, cheap eats along the coast and a big hostel scene (I volunteered in one for a month), you can live well on a student budget.
